U16 and U19 Basketball v Colaiste Bhríde Carnew

It was a day of mixed fortunes for the CBS as the u16’s were unlucky to go down 29 21 to a determined Colaiste Bhride. While the U19’s had a great day going coming out the right side of the 49 27 score line.

The u16s were unable to convert possession and chances into scores which meant that despite a serious effort they were unable to get the big W. The first quarter was the best showing of the CBS ability they had chance after chance but were only able to come out with 7 points with Jedi Osuji being coming out with 5 of those, while the Carnew outfit were able to get 6 points with less possession. Their more clinical shooting keeping them in the game. The second quarter was tough to take as again despite playing well the CBS boys were unable to get the scores being outscored 7 points to 2. Heads went down in the third with the Carnew side in their stride, this meant a lot of making up to do in the final quarter and they worked hard to try stage a comeback with particular credit going o Mikey Kinsella who scored 6 points in this quarter. MVP on the day was Jedi Osuji with 7 points followed by Mikey Kinsella with 6, Sergiy Kulechenko on his debut scored 4 points with Sean O’Neill and Milosz Konkell getting 2 each.

The u19s had a much better day at the office despite not being able to pull away until the second quarter. The first quarter saw great attacking work from the CBS initially as they raced into a lead. However Carnew reorganised themselves after a time out and it took the CBS time to work out how to break down the man to man defence that Colaiste Bhride had put in place and the quarter which started so brightly finished 10 10. The second quarter was a different story and as the Arklow boys got to grips with the man to man defence they used it to their advantage to spread the play and create space for Tadhg Powell to dominate in the centre as he carried the ball through the Carnew defence to either get his own scores or set shots up on a tee for his team mates. The third quarter brought the result of the game into no doubt when the CBS built up a 36 21 lead going into the final quarter. Where scores where spread around through the team and giving a chance for all the squad to get some valuable game time. MVP on the day was Tadhg Powell with 14 of the 49 points and an uncountable number of assists. Other scores were Craig Caulfield, Niall O’Donovan and Ben Somers with 6 each, Sam Hampson with 4, two points each for Tony Xu, Sean McCarthy, Conn Kinsella, Roan Freehill and Patrick Dickenson. Ryan Harper got the final point with a free throw from a well earned foul through some clever attacking movement.
