Arklow CBS School News. Week ended Friday 6th December 2019

21st November 2019

On the 21st of November, the Arklow CBS U19 football team travelled down to Wexford o seek revenge in treacherous conditions. Despite the poor weather, the boys were all fired up after losing on penalties the previous week.

The game started slowly, with the conditions playing a big factor, knowing this was a ‘MUST WIN’ game, Arklow began to push forward and got their reward just before half time, with a goal from Jack Kavanagh just one minute before the half time.

Arklow came out all guns blazing in the second half and scored once again, with a great team goal, finished off by Jack O’Reilly. Joe McGeary was then introduced, in what proved to be a tactical masterclass by manager Mick Walker. Joe then scored, shortly after coming on. The next goal was then scored after a great team move which ended with Marcel Kasperek’s powerful strike into the roof of the net, with that the floodgate’s truly opened. After a good defensive display from Arklow’s solid back line, Arklow caught Wexford on the counter attack, with Marcel Kasperek running through on goal and finishing with aplomb.

After a dazzling run down the wing from Kyle Nolan, he then whipped the ball on for Joe McGeary to make it 6. Joe then added another and completed his hat-trick after a powerful run and finish.

Wexford to their credit, kept fighting to the end and got a consolation goal after a fine header.

After a goal mouth scramble saw the ball fall to Marcel, he composed himself and placed the ball into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick.

With a tight start to the game, Arklow CBS ran out with an emphatic 8 – 1 win and revenge was truly got.

Fifth Year Volleyball

Our annual volleyball final between our fifth year tutor groups took place today. Amidst much excitement and raucous noise, the title was taken by 5B. They won both games in a very close fought contest! Many thanks to Ms. Merrigan and Mr. Kennedy for organising this much loved event!

Cake sale in aid of Wicklow Hospice

A huge cake sale was had in aid of Wicklow Hospice this Wednesday. A massive €300 was raised for this fantastic cause! Ms. White would like to thank all the parents and teachers who so kindly donated items to sell and also to all the students and staff members who purchased items on the day. It was fantastic to see the students support such a fantastic charity.

TY Financial Literacy Week with Bank of Ireland

Local man Cian Doyle has been a regular visitor to the school over the past few weeks helping the Transition Year students to set up a school branch of the Bank of Ireland. Students have really embraced this challenge and are successfully recruiting new student clients and assisting them in setting up accounts.

Arklow Credit Union

Stephen from the credit union continues to set up his mobile credit union outside Ms. White’s office every Tuesday lunchtime. Here students can deposit and withdraw money and check their balances. This on site credit union is a great facility for the students and establishing a pattern of saving will really help them out in later life or when they go to college.

Think Languages

This Friday saw Ms. King and Mr. O’ Gorman go to the Conference centre in Dublin along with our Transition Year students. This event specially for transition year students celebrates all the fun and benefits of foreign language learning. The Think Languages event gave them a sneak peek into how they can use their language skills in the real world. They had the chance to discover new cultures and foods, they were inspired by special guests and had the chance to talk to people who use foreign languages in their careers and those who can help with their own language learning journey. A really enjoyable and informative day was had by all.

U17 Soccer

We wish our under 17 soccer team the very best of luck today as they play a home game against Woodbrook College! Full match report next week!

Christmas Exams

Next week sees the start of our Christmas exams. First, second and fifth year students will sit these exams.

ERST Student Council Conference Meeting

On Thursday, three members of the Arklow CBS student council; Diego Akut, Adam Shanley and Larry Wolohan, along with members from all Edmund Rice schools across Ireland attended the Edmund Rice Schools Trust conference. This was their first time attending an ERST conference.

The meeting took place from 9.30am to 3.30pm with many enjoyable activities. One of these activities had all students attending move from table to table to gather information on what the student councils are doing for their schools. From this activity, the three members of our student council who attended gathered information on what else we could possibly do to improve our school’s situation.

A number of presentations were given to outline the ideologies of the schools. Several schools had a culture week, an LGBTQ+ week and one in particular, the first Edmund Rice school: Mount Sion mentioned that they were a ‘School for Sanctuary’. This means that they allow all students regardless of race, religion and or background to attend their school. This school doesn’t just let new students of different backgrounds in and leave it at that, they ease them into their new environment with the help of all current students and staff members. With this in mind, they have a diverse student body consisting of 41 differing nationalities.

The main goal of this conference was to communicate the ideas of all the students present which was done without problems.

Report written by Diego Akut.

A really enjoyable and thoroughly informative day was had by the students who attended and they came back with loads of new ideas for their own student’s council. Many thanks to Ms. Whelan for accompanying the students.
