GAELIC

After a disappointing one-point loss to our near neighbours Gaelscoil na Mara, Arklow C.B.S. first year boys got their season back on track with a hard earned win away to Carnew. This second round of the first year league took place on Thursday 24th of January at a heavy rain soaked Carnew Emmets pitch.

After a nervous start, which saw Carnew race into a 1-1 lead, the C.B.S. finally started playing as a unit with Aaron O Brien and Liam Murphy solid in defence.

Michael Gough at centre forward became a driving force in attack with a well taken goal followed by a point from the ever lively Patrick Shaw. A very evenly contested first half finished off with a long distance point from Jamie Wolohan.

A much improved C.B.S. team became more dominant in the second half with Tom Byrne and Jamie Wolohan causing major trouble with their menacing runs through the centre. The in-form Michael Gough chipping in with a fine taken goal from a high catch at full forward. Gough added another point shortly after and the exciting Pat Shaw chipped in with a goal and a point as well.

An excellent defensive display lead by Jun Jie Hang, Adam Collier and the terrier like Shane Monaghan kept out the best efforts of a hard working Carnew team. The game ended with a joint venture as the physical imposing duo of Cillian Brehony and Jake Molloy finished a well-placed cross by the lively Darragh O’ Connor to the net.

Given the difficult weather conditions and challenging heavy pitch both teams managed to serve up a game of immense quality. C.B.S. now look forward to their last league match against Avondale. Winning is a must in order to progress to the knock out stages of the league. The players are also busy preparing for their upcoming first round match in the championship with a home draw to Woodbrook of Bray.

The starting team was – Denis O Reilly, Liam Murphy, Adam Collier, Arron O Brien, Jun Jie Hang, Patrick Shaw, Tom Byrne, Shane Monaghan, Jamie Wolohan, Michael Gough, Daragh O’ Connor, Jake Molloy, Cillian Brehony. Many thanks to Mr. Fanning for all the effort he puts into the Gaelic team.

BASKETBALL

Arklow C.B.S. 1st year basketball v Avondale, Arklow lost 12 11 in what proved to be a very exciting and unlucky game for the first years. After getting the best possible start and scoring 4 baskets without return from Ross Kinsella, Aaron O’ Brien and two from Cian mc Donagh things got tougher in the second quarter as Avondale got into the game and scored 6 points of their own without reply. The can got back into the hand in the 3rd quarter with a basket from Jin Jie Huang that kept the C.B.S. in front. The 4th quarter saw Arklow under severe pressure and they went behind. Jake Molly scored to leave Arklow 11 9 in front with 2 minutes to go. Arklow absorbed pressure and made their own chances but couldn't score. As the seconds were winding down and it looked like Arklow were going to win it a hopeful shot from Avondale went into the hoop and with only 10 seconds left Arklow were unable to score. The game finished 12 11 in favour of Avondale. Brilliant play C.B.S. lads!

Arklow C.B.S. v Avondale second year was another close game with Arklow again coming out on the wrong side of the result by a small margin. After a tough first quarter C.B.S. went in down by four points. An improved defensive performance in the second quarter saw C.B.S. concede no baskets but unfortunately they weren't able to convert any of their chances either. Owen Byrne was the hero in the third quarter as he scored the only basket for either team which left the C.B.S. trailing by 2 points going into the last quarter. A big improvement in attack was left unrewarded as shot after shot were thrown but only three points were scored with Owen Byrne converting a free throw and Niall O'Donovan converting a rebound. It wasn't enough as Avondale proved more clinical and got 4 points in the final quarter to leave the score 8 5 to Avondale. Great play C.B.S. lads! Many thanks to Ms. Merrigan for all the time she gives to training the teams, organising matches and accompanying the lads to matches.
