The Green School's Committee at Arklow CBS has been actively working towards making our school more environmentally friendly. Over the past few months, we have made significant progress in organisation and sustainability initiatives.

To ensure strong leadership, the committee has elected a Chairperson (Jack Fleming Mc Dermott) and Secretary (Aaron Byrne), along with establishing an IT team to support communication and awareness campaigns.

In January, we launched our theme of sustainability, encouraging students to adopt eco-friendly habits and make responsible environmental choices. As part of our waste management efforts, committee members have been carrying out weekly bin runs every Friday, sorting and disposing of waste correctly to maintain a cleaner school environment.

A key initiative has been the introduction of a returnbottle recycling bin as part of Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme, which allows students to recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans while contributing to sustainability efforts. So far, the scheme has raised nearly €100, helping to support future environmental projects within the school. To increase awareness, we have placed posters in classrooms, reminding students of what items go into each bin and the importance of proper waste disposal.

Additionally, the committee has taken steps to improve the school’s surroundings by painting the lane wall near the school, enhancing the space while promoting environmental awareness.

The Green Schools Committee remains committed to making a positive impact on Arklow CBS and will continue working towards achieving our first green flag for the school, under the theme "Litter and waste".
