Annual Fifth Year History Trip

We had an early start on Wednesday morning for our annual tour to Northern Ireland. 40 students left Arklow at 6.45 am on Wednesday morning and headed North for an action packed few days. We started off with a visit to Crumlin road jail followed by a political tour of the city. All our history students found the political tour riveting. Hearing a first-hand primary account of Belfast during the troubles and seeing the peace walls and murals really brought the history syllabus to life. Various photo stops around the city ensured that the students captured what life was like for a teenager living in Belfast during the troubles. One of the highlights of the day was when the students were given the chance to sign their names on the world famous peace wall that has divided the Catholic and Protestant communities for over 45 years. On day two we took the scenic Antrim Coast Road to the Giant's Causeway, all the students were blown away by this incredible natural phenomenon. The world of Westeros was brought to life as the students visited many of the epic Game of Thrones locations. Our fearless students were undaunted as they crossed the Carrick a Reed rope bridge, suspended almost 100 feet above sea level. We also visited compelling dark hedges which has been used to represent the Kings road in Game of Thrones. The only thing we didn’t see was a Three-Eyed Raven but all our Game of Thrones fans were suitably impressed having fully immersed themselves in the real Game of Thrones experience on another highly entertaining CBS tour of Northern Ireland.

Many thanks to Mr. Cosgrove for organising and to Ms. Byrne and Majella for accompanying.

TY Activities

Yet again our TY students have enjoyed an action packed week filled with cooking, trips and charitable work! On Monday the 1st of April TY students participated in the second week of their cooking course this week the students made vegetable soup and scones. The boys really enjoyed the process and are looking forward to next week. The best part of the cooking course is eating what is produced!

On Thursday the 4th TY students along with 2000 other TY students attended Leaders on our Level in the Convention Center in Dublin hosted by Terenure College. The students experienced motivational informative speeches from Mark Pollock, Fr Peter McVerry and An Taoiseach to name a few. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and certainly some of the speakers provided them with some very serious food for thought. Many thanks to Ms. Garvey for organising and to Majella for accompanying.

On Friday the 5th TY students collected for the Special Olympics at various collection points around the town. Our students were only too happy to participate in this wonderful fundraising event for this really worthy cause. Thanks to Irene Sweeny for organising it.

First year football

Our first year football team bowed out at the semi-final stages.

Last Thursday saw Arklow CBS’ First Year Gaelic football team travel to Ballymoney to take on Avondale in the championship semi-final.

The loss of our star forward Michael Gough was a major blow to the team before throw in.

The CBS lads got off to a real bright start with Jamie Wolohan chipping in with 2 points in quick succession before Pat Shaw found the net following a good team build up.

Avondale hit back before the end of the first half with a goal and two points of their own before Aaron O’Brien struck for a long range point.

Those who really excelled in the first half for Arklow were Liam Murphy at full back and his corner backs, Adam Collier and Cian McDonagh.

Both teams struggled to come to terms with the wet and windy conditions in the second half, but Avondale really took control of midfield with an outstanding display from their county star.

With 10 minutes to go the sides were level. However, the CBS side really struggled defensively to cope with the driving runs and some risk tackling allowed Avondale in for 2 penalties and three frees

Denis O Reilly really had a man of the match performance in goal as he struggled to keep Avondale out.

It was a gallant display by the team but sadly our run in the championship came to an end.

The team and school wish to thank the AGM club and their pitch coordinator Sinead for all their help and support and for providing the school with extra trainers and mentors. Many thanks also to Mr. fanning for all his hard work with the team. It is much appreciated by the students.
