Arklow CBS News for week ending 01.12.23
Art news
Over the last few weeks, there has been a buzz of creativity in the Art Room!
Armed with brushes and buckets of colourful paint, our TY Art students have been busy creating stunning murals for Arklow Tidy Towns. Well done to all those involved. Watch out for the Big Reveal……coming soon!
Think Languages Week
Our TYs, 5th Year and 6th Year French and German students celebrated #Thinklanguagesweek with the screening of the French Film “Seize ans” and the German film “Balloon”.
Balloon
Set in 1979 Cold War Germany, this gripping tale, inspired by actual escape ventures, follows the true story of Günter Wetzel and Peter Strelzyk, who, no longer able to endure the repressive East-German regime, plot to escape using a homemade hot air balloon. Working with their families, the duo are against immense time pressure, as an ongoing Stasi investigation looms.
Seize ans/Sixteen
Classmates Nora and Léo fall in love at school, but their relationship faces intense opposition from their parents and family. Despite the different familial backgrounds and beliefs, the pair continue their romance undercover. This contemporary retelling of Romeo and Juliet focusing on opposing religious beliefs rather than duelling families, is a gripping and engaging film.
Chess Club
Chess club is in full swing, and it takes place every Tuesday and Thursday lunch time in Room 24. All welcome.
5th Year and 6th Year Geography Field trip
5th and 6th Year Geography students headed to Roadstone this week for a field trip on rocks and quarrying. Many thanks to Alan Geraghty for organising and to Jack McDonald for showing the students around.
Arklow Cancer Support Fundraiser
Well done to TY student Josh Boylan on raising €56.50 for Arklow Cancer Supportfrom his TY mini company where he was selling juice and croissants at break time. It was an extremely kind gesture to donate all profits to such a worthy cause.
TY 1916 History Walking Tour of Dublin
Our Ty’s took part in the 1916 History Walking tour recently. This guided tour was extremely interesting and informative which saw the students visit the key sites from the 1916 Rising. The weather stayed dry and the boys got their steps in on a very enjoyable day out. Thank you to Ms. A Kinsella, Ms. Carey and Elaine for accompanying the students.
Under 15 soccer news
Hard luck to our U15 soccer team on their defeat to Gorey Community School in the Wicklow -Wexford league this week. This brings our league campaign to an end but the Leinster Cup campaigns next week. Well done to all involved and to Ms. Cummins.
Basketball News
Arklow CBS u19 basketball team were unluckily to come up just short after making the trip down to Waterford to play St. Augustine's College Dungarvan in the regional semi final. The score was 37 to 34 and the
final quarter was a tense nail biting affair, but the Arklow boys just couldn't quite get over the line after leaving themselves a lot of work to do after the opening half.
It was perhaps to the detriment of the team that they had been so dominant in their run to the semi final, as they came up against a very tall and physically intimidating Dungarvan side. The CBS started slow and neglected to initiate a lot of the driving attaching play that had been a corner stone of their game play over the last few weeks. After the first two quarters the CBS were down 27 15. At this stage it has the potential to be a white washing.
The third quarter saw an improvement in play as the Arklow Boys came out of the quarter outscoring their opponents 8 to 7 to claw back 1 point in the difference. The influential Tom Kavanagh was fouled out of the game in this quarter which could have been the nail in the coffin, but instead inspired by his work rate and selfless efforts for the team the CBS rallied in the final quarter threw everything at their opponents brining it back to a 2 point game going into the final minute. This showed the true character of the Arklow Boys who despite starting the game well below their potential dug into the deepest recesses of their hearts to show true determination and passion to get their team back into the game.
The final minute was a tactical marvel with the CBS driving to try and get a basket to bring the game into overtime and St Augustine's playing keep away to try ensure there was no opportunity to drive to the net. This resulted in some tactical fouling on the part of the CBS to try regain possession but unfortunately meant giving away 1 point from a free throw to the Dungarvan side leaving 3 points in it with 6 seconds on the clock. A throw in from the half way line was worked to MVP of the game and of the year Jeddy Osuji who managed to get the shot off from outside the 3 point line but was unable to find the net.
This was a whole team effort across the season and coach Ms Merrigan would like to thank all the players for their commitment and dedication. The squad will regroup again next year, while John Lamanga will be a loss next year as the only sixth year on the team, it does leave the majority of the squad in place to try go one step further next year and make the final.
Scorers on the day were MVP Jeddy Osuji with 9 points, Ruzzel Degolado with 7, Ryan Morgan and Daniel O'Donovan with 6 each, Took Kavanagh with 4 and Sean O'Connor rounded it out with 2 points.
Senior Gaelic Football news
Our Senior Gaelic football team had another win this week when they played Gaelcholáiste Chill Dara on a score of 5-14 to 2-2. The full match report is below:
Arklow C.B.S 5.14 GC Kildare 2.2
Our senior football team were out against Kildare GC last week in the Leinster Senior Schools Competition. After a bit of early shadow boxing the C.B.S lads found their stride when Sean O Neil put the ball in the net. This set the tone for the rest of the half
Cian Scanlon was exceptional as both an attacking threat and defensive stalwart. He scored 1.3 by half time in a man of the match display. Liam Murphy the Adventurous Avoca full back was a powerhouse, constantly calming those around him with his ball carrying skills. Jack Keogh and Paul Moore tormented the Kildare back line chipping in with goals and points.
It was a monster Kristian Dowling point that made history making him the youngest ever scorer on an Arklow C.B.S senior football team. Only a few minutes later Jack Wolohan put on over the black spot to become the second youngest scorer.
Tom Kavanagh put every bit of his basketball skills to use as he plucked the ball from the clouds on multiple occasions, finishing with a goal and a point to his name.
An all round solid team performance with the bomb squad making an appearance for the last 20 minutes led by Killian Brehony putting the finishing touches on a classy display from the C.B.S.
First Year soccer news
Our First years had their first game against CCA Kilcoole in the Leinster cup in Lamberton this week. This was an entertaining game with both sides playing fluid football. It was end to end stuff with the match finishing on a score 3-2 to Kilcoole. Hard luck to Arklow CBS and best of luck to Kilkoole CCA with the rest of the season.
