Arklow CBS march on to the final of the South East Basketball League!

Comeragh College made the long trip from Carrick-on-Suir to participate in a keenly contested semi-final. It was a tentative start to the first quarter with scores being exchanged for the first three or four minutes until the CBS hit a patch of form, where every shot seemed destined for the net. While the defence was winning rebound after rebound. Ryan Morgan and Sergiy Kulachenko used height for the former and strength for the latter to win any loose balls in the CBS D. Nazar Sykal led the attack in the first quarter with 7 points, including a well executed 3 pointer. He was ably assisted in the scoring from Yehor Sykal with 4 points, two of which came from two free throws. Sergiy helped keep the scoreboard moving with 2 points of his own and Ryan Morgan scored a free throw after some excellent offensive rebounding. The second quarter saw a big challenge come in from Comeragh College, they outscored the CBS 12 points to 10 in what proved to be their purple patch. Nazar Sykal kept the scoreboard moving in the right direction with 8 of the 10 CBS points. The final score came from excellent vision from our two Spanish imports Hugo Merino spotting a quick break from Javier Suaz who easily put in his uncontested layup. The 3rd quarter saw the CBS establish dominance again coming out on top 15 to 6. MVP Nazar Sykal again came out top scorer with 8 points, but some good play from Sean O’Connor saw him grab himself a basket while Shane Gregory had a lovely 3 point shot to really put the gloss on the scoring in the quarter. Comeragh did put up a challenge with Ryan Morgan facing his toughest defensive test against the tall strong Comeragh centre. The final quarter saw the CBS finish off with 9 points to Comeragh’s 10 but by this stage the result was in no doubt. Ciaran Redmond opened the scoring converting one of his two well won free throws. Yehor Sykal went one better converting both of his free throws while Hugo Merino who had worked hard any time he was on the court finally got the scores he deserved with two baskets and the CBS finished up the game with a well taken lay up from Carlos Manteca. The CBS march onto the final next week against opposition to be confirmed.

Soccer News

There was mixed fortune for our u15 soccer team in the Wicklow-Wexford league this week. Tuesday saw them make the journey to Wexford CBS where unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of a thrilling, fast paced game with little between the sides. Goals from Darragh Kinch on the day. The week finished on a brighter note with a 3-2 victory against Gorey Community School. All sixteen players used today played a major role in this win, with Kyal Byrne fishing the goals making him a hat-trick hero! Well done to all players involved and to coaches Paul and Ryan!

Elma Walsh Visit

We were delighted to welcome guest speaker Elma Walsh to the school on Thursday to talk to our 3rd year students. Elma spoke about her son Donal’s life and struggles when he was diagnosed with Cancer as a teenager. Donal came to prominence through his writings and subsequent appearance on RTE Brendan O’Connor’s ‘The Saturday Night Show’. Donal, who fundraised tirelessly while battling Cancer, has now had the Donal Walsh #livelife Foundation set up by his family primarily in order to promote his anti-suicide #Livelife message. The foundation also assists in his other causes of providing age-appropriate teenage facilities in hospital and hospice care centres. To date the foundation have given over €500,000 to various teenage projects and mental health facilities that will benefit the Irish teenager for years to come.
