Senior Gaelic Football Final

Argentina v France 2022, Golden state warriors v Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 NBA Finals Game 7, Federer v Nadal Wimbledon 2008 sporting finals that will live long in the memory. Add to this list the Leinster D final between Arklow CBS v reigning champions Coláiste Eoin, two passionate and competitive teams who served up a treat to those in attendance.

The Arklow lads got off to the perfect start when they registered a goal with the first attack of the game. The powerhouse that is Jack Flusk stuck the ball in the back in the net. This was the perfect start for the Arklow lads as the goal sent the CBS fans into frenzies on the side-line. Fluskies goal was the perfect spark as almost immediately the whole team just caught fire. Paul Moore and Tiernan Gahan kicked points in quick succession. Gahan was a constant menace with his Ja Fallon jinks sending opposition players this way and that. In the spirit of champions Coláiste Eoin kicked three points to leave two between the teams. Wing backs Ryan Scanlon & Eabhan Kinch would have made the best ultra-marathon runners look like couch to 5k beginners with their barn storming runs up and down the wings. Both teams traded scores just before half time to leave the score at 1-3 to 0-4.

The second half could have been taken straight from season 5 episode 8 of ‘Game of Thrones’ ‘Hard home’. Bodies were put on the line as an epic tussle ensued. Momentum ebbed and flowed as two outstanding teams gave it their all. The CBS back line was severely tested but Oran ‘RKO’ Kelly & Sean ‘pool shark’ McCarthy stood firm. Callum ‘Emiliano Martínez’ O Neill was called into action more than once. Aaron O Brien & Jack Mullen were like gladiators going into battle in the centre of the park. Podge Birmingham was like the Duracell bunny and Oran Dunning ran himself into the ground. However it was Kyle Kelly who produced a man of the match display. Watching Kelly put his body on the line again and again was like watching the Kerry great Seamus Moynihan at the height of his powers. If Parnell was the uncrowned king of Ireland than Páidí Kavanagh is certainly our uncrowned all-star of Wicklow. Just as the Carlow team where gaining the upper hand Páidí landed a monster point from around 70 yards out, his second point of the half. It was a hammer blow to the Carlow team, but again they showed grit and determination to draw level with only a few minutes on the clock. With only seconds left on the clock the CBS were awarded a free, Conn Kinsella took responsibility for the pressure kick. Conn had been working on visualisation with the management team since the rugby semi-final and it paid off as he slotted the ball dead centre over the bar for his third point of the day. Visualisation is a mental tool the Arklow players have been encouraged to develop by their manager especially with the leaving cert on the horizon. Mr. Somers told me of the great Kerry v Dublin matches of the 1970s before I was born. I felt envious that I had not been at Croke park to witness these games. I think future generations who hear stories being retold of this epic Balinakill battle between Arklow CBS and Colaiste Eoin will feel the same pangs of envy to have missed out on this modern equivalent of such a momentous occasion.

Final score: Arklow CBS 1-7 Coláiste Eoin 0-9. Match report by an unbiased bainisteoir Mr. Cosgrove.

Art Tour, 2023
6th year and 5th year Art Students travelled by train to Dublin on their annual Art Trip last week. It proved to be a great day whereby the students got to experience an array of art media and styles! Following our viewing of the amazing Public Sculptures, the Famine Memorial on Customs Quay, the Children of Lir, in the Garden of Remembrance, the students then had a guided tour at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Here students got to see great masterpieces by the Impressionists, Manet, Monet and Degas, the work of contemporary artist Sean Scully and view the work and studio of the Expressionist, Francis Bacon. After a well-deserved lunch, the students then went on a guided tour of Street Art, with Alternative Art Tours. Students were given great insight into the world of the street artist, and the meanings and messages within the work by our very enthusiastic guide! After over 12,000 steps achieved by all, students returned home exhausted but creatively inspired!!! Thanks to Majella for accompanying us and well done, to a super group of students!

First Year Soccer

Well done to our 1st year soccer team who have now progressed into the next stage of the Leinster Shield after their win yesterday. A good day at the office for our first year soccer team! We started strong playing some fast football down the wings and although the Greystones defence held firm ,we were able to break through thanks to Stephen Byrne. Our midfield must’ve thought they were still in maths class because the triangle passes, they created were phenomenal. We won a penalty after a handball on the goal line and midfield maestro Lucas slotted it away. Some fine foot work from our striker Aaron meant he scored a goal suitable for the Bernabéu. We went into halftime 3-0 up. We continued to press hard against Greystone C.C. In the second half, but even our firm backline couldn’t hold out the odd attack which were saved brilliantly by Wojciech who stepped up as our goalie after Hubert sustained an injury in the warmup.
There was no clean sheet unfortunately after a dubious penalty was slotted away for Greystones. The goals kept coming as Mark Gleeson got in on the act to put away a fourth and final goal to send us to the next round. Well done Greystones C.C. on a great game. We now look forward to and prepare for our match next Thursday against TempleCarrig.

St. Brigid’s Day - 1st February
Ms. Kinsella, Ms. Battye, Shane Gregory and Josh Boylan made St. Brigid’s Day crosses in class to celebrate the feast day of St. Brigid. Shane was following tradition from last year’s life skills class by giving one to Mr. Somers to ward off the bad spirits in the school!
