First Year Gaelic Football

A huge well done and congratulations to our 1st Year Gaelic team on their win over Bridgetown this week. . This was their first league game of the season due to the postponement of the league before Christmas .It was a game of goal opportunities taken and missed.. Bridgetown took their opportunities and took advantage of some loose defending on the CBS side. However the CBS forwards squandered up to 4 good goal opportunities The Bridgetown goalkeeper stood up manfully keeping the ball out of the net on a couple of occasions The final score was 5-6 to 2-8 . The CBS played patches of good football moving the ball fast but struggled against a larger more physical midfield pairing from Bridgetown. Those to really shine for Arklow CBS were Peter Lappin in goal, Seán Kelly at full back and the always dangerous Darragh Kinch at full forward. The team will now progress into the shield competition.

Arklow CBS; Peter Lappin, Evan Whelan, Sean Kelly, Pauric Healy, Jack Killen, Kristian Dowling, Ruairi O Neill, Kyal Byrne, Jack Wolohan, Comghan Powell, Aaron Kenna, Ryan Dunning, Ben Zhou, Darragh Kinch, Cillian McDonald, Sylvester Bourke, Michael Cody.

1st Year Basketball news

1st years made the long journey down to Bridgetown for their South East D quarter final. It wasn't too be for the boys unfortunately as they came out the wrong end of an incredibly well contested game.

The journey took its toll on the boys with some travel sickness not proving to be an ideal preparation. They suffered through a very tough first quarter where they went down 12 0. This was more through ill-discipline than a massive difference in skill. CBS have away 5 team fouls early in the quarter and Bridgetown had some excellent free throwers who scored the majority of their baskets with only 6 of the 12 points coming from play.

The second quarter was a much different affair with the CBS showing heart and determination to outscore the south Wexford outfit by 12 points to 4 with Darragh Kinch pooping up with 2 beautifully taken lay ups and 2 scored free throws. Kristian Dowling showed that this team were no pushovers when he powered through to score the first 2 points of the quarter. This was followed up by a lovely bank shot from Cillian McDonald with Riain Dunning getting the final CBS basket of the quarter. While their opponents did manage 2 baskets in this quarter, the performance rejuvenated the boys going into the third quarter.

This was a tighter affair with the CBS scoring 10 points to Bridgetown's 4 leaving the teams level on 22 points each. Darragh Kinch put on a matter class in lay ups scoring 3 in the quarter with Kyal Byrne finally getting on the score sheet after numerous chances in the first quarter that didn't go his way. He threw 4 points with two of those being pressure free throws to keep the CBS level. Kristian Dowling had an excellent quarter keeping Bridgetown's Alex Howlen to only 1 point in this quarter as he ran riot in the first quarter shooting 5 points and running all the play for Bridgetown.

The final quarter was tit for tat up until the final two and a half minutes when the CBS started to tire and they lost centre Philip Michta to five fouls, four of which came in the first quarter which meant he played well over a quarter workout getting any fouls ina much improved defensive performance. Bridgetown got wise to the scoring threat provided by Darragh Kinch and Kyal Byrne and marked them much tighter in this quarter, both boys managed 2 points each and had more scoring chances but we're under increased Bridgetown pressure and just couldn't get the ball to sink into the basket. The final score of the quarter for the CBS came from the excellent Sean Kelly who for all his work in the game deserved more than 2 points. The score was sitting on thirty points to 28 for well over 2 minutes in a quarter dominated by defenses but a 3 point attempt from Bridgetown put serious pressure on the Arklow boys and despite a great deal of hard work they weren't able to get another basket. Bridgetown got one more score with a minute to go to ensure their win. The CBS team should be immensely proud of their performance and huge credit to the boys who didn't get on today for the support and encouragement they have to their teammates. There is a lot of potential in this team and if they all keep training next year there is potential to get further than a quarter final.

Congratulations to MVP Darragh Kinch with 14 of the CBS' 20 points.
