Arklow CBS School News For Week Ending 20th January 2023

Gaelic Football

Our Gaelic football teams have had an extremely busy but successful week. Beginning with the second year Gaelic football team who won a tough battle in the South-Leinster quarter-final on unlucky for some Friday 13th against Baltinglass. The match was played in Castletown with our lads eventually coming out on top. Next up was our junior football team who had an away victory against Ramsgrange Community School on Tuesday. It was a proud day for the Mullen and Scanlon families, as both sets of brothers played a key role in the team's victory. Jack and Dylan Mullen starred at midfield. While Ryan Scanlon operated at centre back with younger brother Kian causing damage at half forward. The CBS lads came out on top, on a score line of 4-5 to 1-6. Next up is a home game to Avondale. Following this, the second-year team were out again! This time they had a comprehensive victory against Avondale, in the Wicklow league. The game was played in Coolgreany. The lads are now busy preparing for the south Leinster semi-final against Creagh College which will be played at the end of the month. Finally, our senior Gaelic football team played Coláiste Chraobh Abhann on Friday 20th January, there was yet to be a result confirmed at the time of going to print. Well done to all players involved.

Santa Hat Day Fundraiser

It gives us great pleasure to announce that a total of €510 was raised on our Santa Hat day in aid of the Ronald McDonald House charity! Thank you so much to everyone who participated and donated.

Row Hard or Go Home

Congratulations to team Row Hard or Go Home and in particular to our past pupils Shane Culleton and brothers Gearóid and Diarmuid O’Briain on breaking the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a team of five rowers! The team rowed from the Canary Islands to Antigua in 33 days, 12 hours, and 38 minutes. All while raising money for the Laura Lynn Foundation, RNLI, and Rathdrum Cancer support. It was lovely to see Shane mention Arklow CBS as the starting point for the relationship between himself and the O’Briain brothers; Gearóid and Diarmuid in a post- race interview.

TY Trip

Our Transition Year students got to see a different side to Dublin city this week thanks to Secret Street Tours Dublin. This powerful tour brought students through the streets of Dublin through the eyes and experiences of someone who has been affected by homelessness. A truly eye-opening experience.

Visit in from Talk to Tom
Thank you to Ray Cullen, CEO and founder of Talk to Tom, who came in to talk to our 5th year LCVP class on Tuesday. As part of the LCVP Link Modules students learn about voluntary organisations and explore the different services that are available in our community. They recognised the fantastic service provided by Talk to Tom to support those struggling with their mental health, so chose to donate over €600 that they raised from the Christmas Fair Raffle. Ray talked about why and how he started Talk to Tom, the services that are available, and their plans for the future. Talk to Tom offer a range of varied services for the community at Talk To Tom Suicide Prevention & Awareness. These include one to one, group, and family counselling and therapy sessions. Child and adolescent services, bereavement support and community outreach programmes.

Our Current Specialists!!

The 2A Life Skills class have had an ex-static two weeks working on their electrical skills. The lads have been busy, working on wiring plugs, on changing fuses, splitting wires and joining cut wires. Special thanks to the school caretaker Anthony Doyle for lending his experience, the Arklow Recycling Centre for allowing us to borrow old cables and EEW electrical wholesalers for donation of some supplies. As always our SNA Pauline closely supervised the whole operation. Well done to all.
