Romeo & Juliet

For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo! On Thursday, our third years were treated to a day trip to the Mill Theatre in Dundrum where they enjoyed a fantastic production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We hope this day will benefit student revision as we move ever closer to June and they will all agree that it was nice to browse JD’s Spring/Summer collection!

Awesome Arklow Utd’s u15 Success

Congratulations to our students that were involved with Arklow Utd’s u15 shield trophy victory at the weekend, after a dramatic and thrilling game. The match went right to the wire with Arklow Utd eventually winning on penalties against Ashford Rovers.

Hand to Heart Collection

We are collecting toiletry items and clean, freshly washed sleeping bags for the Heart to Hand Charity. This charity is bringing aid to the victims of the recent earthquake. They are especially in need of baby items such as nappies, wipes and creams. As a school we would love to help out as much as we can so please donate generously to our appeal. All donations can be left in Ms. White’s office and will be collected by the Heart to Hand Charity. Many thanks for your support.

Brrrr-lin Trip February 2023!

Transition year and fifth year students enjoyed a fabulous few days in a chilly Berlin before mid-term break in what was our first overseas school tour since 2019. Students toured this historical city taking in sites such as the Brandenburg Gate, Charlottenburg Palace and the Soviet War Memorial. As well as this, students had guided tours of Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum and Museum Fur Naturkunde. It wasn’t all historical sites for this tour though as students also visited Berlin Zoo and the world’s biggest indoor rainforest and Germany’s highest water-slide tower at Tropical Islands! Many thanks to Ms. Dominican and Ms. Ryan for organising and accompanying students.

Senior Footballers back on the road again!

Arklow CBS 9-13 Scoil Chonglais 1-6
This was the first outing for the CBS lads after their two point Leinster semi-final defeat before midterm. These lads left everything on the pitch in that match.
However there was no hangover from that defeat as they gave a five star performance against Baltinglass today. Playing against the wind in the first half did not hinder the CBS as goals from Páidí Kavanagh, Jamie Wolohan & Paul Moore gave the CBS a comfortable lead. Aaron O’Brien showed true grit by not only getting out of his sick bed to play but putting in a man of the match performance, the man has the lung capacity of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Pa Shaw came into the fray at halftime and won the battle in the air around the middle for the 30 minutes of the second half.
Arguably the move of the match occurred when Ryan Scanlon hit a 20-yard pass to Sean McCarthy on the turn. McCarthy just kept on going and when he was in range stuck it in the back of the net. Scanlon & McCarthy had some beautiful interplay today.
This was a performance where every member of the squad left their mark giving the management team some headaches over selection for the upcoming game against Pres Bray on Friday.

Gaelic Football News

Our second year Gaelic football team played in the South-Leinster final this week against a strong Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown. The game was played at a neutral Éire Óg pitch in Carlow. Despite missing two of our starting players through injury our boys got off to a great start with a quick goal. With very little between the sides the first half ended 3.02 – 3.06 in favour of Coláiste Mhuire. Unfortunately, the opposition hit a purple patch in the second half with the game ending 8.07- 4.03. The boys should be very proud of their gallant efforts and on reaching this stage of the competition. The following day was the turn of our junior footballers to take to the field. They played a home game against Avondale Community College and came out on top 4.08 to 2.06.

Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant

Some of our budding engineers enjoyed a real ‘treat’ on Wednesday as Mr. Somers brought them on a tour of the new Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant for the Avoca river. Students were decked out in safety gear and shown around this impressive site. The whole process of the treatment plant was explained to them; from how they pump the sewage to where it goes and how it is filtered. Thanks to all at Uisce Éireann and Wicklow County Council for facilitating this visit.

Is fearr Gaeilge Bhriste, ná Béarla Cliste!

Our sixth-year students sat their mock Irish oral exam this week with an external examiner. This proved to be a very worth-while learning experience for them as they prepare for the real oral exam at Easter. Secondly, Wicklow GAA are offering a full Gaeltacht sponsorship to one luck student this Summer along with 6 x €150 Gaeltacht vouchers. To be in with a chance to win, fill in the entry form at www.officialwicklowgaa.ie. Furthermore, we are delighted to welcome the return of our annual Gaeltacht this April after a hiatus since Covid. This trip will take place 17th -19th April and is opened to first- and second-year students. The students in question received a note regarding this trip along with a sample timetable this week.

Taekwondo

The Inter-club taekwondo championships were recently held in Enniscorthy. A big well done to our students Olly Kazimirs who won gold and to Markuss Kazimirs on winning bronze!
