Christmas Wishes from Principal Mr. Somers

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all staff, students and families a very happy and safe Christmas and best wishes for 2022. Thank you all for your continued cooperation and support during 2021.

Yet again I am amazed at the resilience of our students. A special word of thanks to our current 1st Years who have settled in so well to secondary school life.. The continued mask wearing, hand sanitising and desk sanitising hasn’t phased them one bit. Well done our 1st, 2nd and 5th years who sat their Christmas exams this week.

Arklow CBS will close on Wednesday 22nd and reopen on January 6th 2022.

Enjoy the Christmas break everyone. Looking forward to welcoming you all back in January

Kind regards,

Mr. Somers

Basketball News

Our U19s and U16s brought their seasons to a close last Monday with two games against Gorey Community school.

The U16s lost out 38 to 26 but have shown great heart all year and this was probably their most well rounded performance despite the score line. The improvement in this team from the start of the year to the end has been amazing and the boys should be very proud of themselves for all the hard work they have put in training. Sean O’Neill finally found the scoring form that all his hard work and ball handling skills deserved. Jeddy Osuji put in a commanding performance winning rebound after rebound and on another day if half the shots taken had went in we would have won the game. While they didn’t get the win every player put in a good account of themselves. MVP on the day for the CBS was Mikey Kinsella with 10 points he showed leadership on the court with a good defensive performance but more importantly showed good communication and organisation skills in helping to position his team mates in the zone defence. He was followed up in the scoring by Jeddy and Sean O’Neill with 8 each and rounded off with 2 points from Milosz Konkell.

The U19s went down 38 35 in what was unfortunately a must win game to advance to the next round after Christmas. For long periods the CBS were the team on top with more possession and shots but they couldn’t convert this into points and paid for it with a very harsh defeat despite some excellent play especially in the last quarter. Gorey got their noses in front early and had a well organised solid defence that the CBS just couldn’t get the better of. Gorey managed to hold their lead for most of the game up until the last two minutes when the CBS showed great heart and character to get the game back level with a Craig Caulfield 3 pointer. There was a chance to go ahead with the ball cruelly running around the rim and back out, Gorey took advantage and went back up the court to score a two pointer and a final free throw for the win. It’s a testament to the quality of our basketball players that our u19’s came runners up and nearly beat a school with a student population of well over 1500. Our boys can be proud of the season they put in and probably a little justifiably disappointed that they aren’t advancing. MVP on the day was the leader of the team Tadhg Powell with 17 of the teams 35 points. He was followed up by Craig Caulfield with 8, Ben Somers and Niall O’Donovan with 4 each and Conor Kiernan with 2. Well done boys on a fantastic season. It was a pleasure to have ye all and I will miss the departing 6th years off the team, it won’t be the same without ye but I’m sure the fifth years on the team will step up to fill the places ye will leave open for them.
