Arklow CBS news for week ending 18.02.22

Basketball news

It was a busy week for our Junior basketball teams this week.

Congratulations to our 2nd Year team on their victory over Gaelcholáiste na Mara on a scoreline of 16-4.

Later in the week our1st and 2nd year basketball teams made the trip to Carnew and while they played some good basketball they were unlucky not to come away with the wins.

This was the first outing for the first years and the score line does not reflect the ability of this group. The boys defended very well but despite some good attacking play and chances, the ball refused to go into the net numerous times for the Arklow boys. Both teams put in a tentative display in the first quarter with neither being able to really go for the jugular and get the scores their play deserved. Carnew just edged it with 2 points to 0. The second quarter doesn't reflect the play at all as the CBS matched their opponents’ intensity but not their accuracy going down 8 0 in that quarter. The third quarter proved a bit more fruitful as Arklow outscored Carnew 6 to 4. Despite good play again in the final quarter the accuracy just wasn't there when it was needed and Coláiste Bhríde came out 6 2. That left the final score at what looks like a one sided 20 point to 8 loss on the scoreboard but for any spectators the quality of play was undeniable. Scorers for the CBS were Kyal Byrne with 3 points from a free throw and 2 from play, and Comghan Powell with a beautiful 3 pointer. Rounding out the scoring was Darragh Kinch with 2 points.

The second years put up an excellent performance against a very fancied Carnew side. They brought the game to within one shot of over time going into the last twenty seconds. It took them a whole to get into the game going down 8 0 in the first quarter but they picked it up in the second but still couldn't claw back the points with Carnew pushing ahead by another two. In the third quarter the team really gelled and played some excellent basketball with the ball moving and support play being a big highlight as Arklow CBS outscored Carnew 7 points to 4 in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a tense affair and went right down to the wire. CBS could maybe have pushed on and scored more than the 7 points to 6 but for point guard and playmaker Tom Kavanagh unlucky to be fouled out early in the quarter. This was an excellent performance for the second years and hopefully it will encourage them to push on in the next games. Scorers on the day were joint MVPs Shane Gregory and Ryan Morgan with 6 points each. While Tom Kavanagh and Ciarán Redmond chipped in with a point each from well win free throws to leave the score 18 points to 14 to Coláiste Bhríde.

Congratulations and well done to all involved.
