Anne McInerney Leinster Cup Final.
Arklow CBS 8
St Mary’s Edenderry 40
Arklow CBS travelled up to the hallowed turf of Donnybrook on Wednesday evening to play in the school’s first ever Leinster Rugby Final .With nearly perfect conditions for a final this was going to be a great spectacle for anyone in attendance.
The first quarter of the game was a kicking battle between the two teams. CBS managed to engineer a penalty in the 7th minute. Which was duly converted by fly half Conn Kinsella to give his side an early lead. St Mary’s then started to gain a foothold which led to try in the 12th minute with the extras added. There 2nd try of the game came after 21 minutes after CBS had held out defensively for a number of phases conversion was added again. CBS were piling pressure on the try line but some resolute defending from Edenderry kept them out. With the game heading to half time some more pressure resulted in an Oran Kelly try scoring effort deemed held up by the officials. With 5 minutes to go in the half the St Mary’s full back broke from his own half to finish under the posts for his side. The 3rd conversion of the game was kicked.
The 2nd half was a much cagier affair with both defences on top until midway through the half when Edenderry’s number 8 and captain burrowed his way over to extend his sides lead by 7. Edenderry added a 4th try as they made their way up the field to finish in the corner. The fly half expertly drilled conversion through the post. Arklow finished the game stronger even with 13 players on the pitch at one point. Oran Kelly managed to get his name on the try scoring list with a powerful run. With the game in it’s final play the CBS pushed forward in search of a second try which their efforts would have deserved. Unfortunately, they were turned over by the opposition who managed to add to their tally with one final try.
After a valiant season from the CBS boys from start to finish coming through every round of the competition they can be massively proud of their effort and let’s hope this could be the start of a great rugby tradition in the school.
