Gaeltacht
Term 2: 2022-23
Dear Parents/Guardian,
Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh go léir. Happy New Year.
We would like to encourage all pupils taking Irish for both the Junior and Leaving Certificates to attend the Gaeltacht as regularly as possible during the summer holidays. This is the only opportunity for 5th years/2nd Years to attend the Gaeltacht during the summer before their Leaving Certificate/Junior Cycle in 2024. While there are many excellent Gaeltachts available, below are some Gaeltachts’ that previous Arklow CBS students have attended.
We understand that this is a significant investment. In order to assist parents with the cost the school has set up a savings club to enable students to save towards the cost of the Gaeltacht visit. A number of parents have expressed interest in this but would like to know if any other students are going within the school. Please contact other parents you know directly. To book your place go directly to the contact details provided above.
Should you require additional information please do not hesitate to contact the Irish Department on the school number.
Yours sincerely,

Gaeltacht 2019
Every Spring students from first and second year get the chance to spend three days in the Gaeltacht. Our trip usually alternates between Gaeltacht na nDéise in Rinn, Co. Waterford and Coláiste na Bhfainn in Droim Rí, Co. Meath.
During the trip students are immersed in the Irish language and culture attending classes, taking part in activities and doing tours of the local area all as Gaeilge. As well as improving their confidence speaking as Gaeilge it is also a great few days for strengthening the bond between students. It is a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all and a highlight of the school calendar.

Gaeltacht 2018
16th January 2018
Dear Parents/Guardian,
Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh go léir. Happy New Year.
As you know 40% of marks in Leaving Certificate Irish are for spoken Irish. Here in CBS Arklow we now do an oral Irish exam for Junior Cert students which is also worth 40%.
We would like to encourage all pupils taking Irish for both the Junior and Leaving Certificates to attend the Gaeltacht as regularly as possible during the summer holidays. This is the only opportunity for 5th years/2nd Years to attend the Gaeltacht during the summer before their Leaving Certificate/Junior Certificate in 2018.
The Irish teachers have a caifé agus comhrá session at lunch time each Friday where the boys have a cuppa and a chat "as Gaeilge." We would love to see more of them attend!!
At a local level 'Glór na nGael' are an independent organisation promoting spoken Irish. They meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm in Costa Coffee. All school pupils are very welcome. This is a free service within the town of Arklow.
We would recommend the following Gaeltachts (but not exclusively) :
