Arklow CBS School News For Week Ending 9th December

Senior Gaelic Football
Our senior Gaelic football team made the trip up the road to play Colaiste Chraobh Abhann in the first round of the Wicklow championship this week. Aided by a very strong wind an impressive CCA rushed into an early lead, scoring from their first four attacks. The CBS lads struggle to get to grips with the game as the wind drove us back like a pack of howling wolves. CCA played some lovely football as they put some more scores on the board. However, just when the game looked out of reach goals at the end of the first half from Aaron O Brien and Padraig Birmingham stirred something in the Arklow lads.
With the wind to our backs in second half all fifteen came out like men possessed in the second half. Having struggled against the wind in the first half, now the wind smelt like a messenger carrying the scent of victory.
Paul Moore was a constant threat throughout, while Conn Kinsella produced some lovely jinking runs which were reminiscent of Ja Fallon circa 1998. Eabhan Kinch covered every blade of grass evoking memories of Declan Meehan in the great Galway team of the 90s/00s. Overall this was great performance by the CBS lads against a very strong CCA team with a three point victory in the end. It was a double win for Sean McCarthy as he also got to post his Santa letter on the way back to school!

Christmas Jumper Day

On Friday 9th December our school took part in a Christmas jumper non-uniform day in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. Each student donated €2 to this great cause with a prize awarded to the best jumper on the day. Thanks to our transition year students for organising.

Transition Year Trade Fair

Well done to all our budding entrepreneurs that took part in our trade fair last week organised by fifth year LCVP students. The fair lasted two days with parents and local primary schools visiting on Wednesday while our own students and teachers shopped there on Thursday. As well as the many mini companies selling their products, fifth year students organised a Christmas raffle in aid of Talk to Tom and Arklow Cancer Society. Many thanks to all the local businesses who generously donated fantastic prizes. A big thank you to Cllr Peir Leonard, Darren Fogarty of Topline Boland's, and Mr Deay for taking the time to come down, interview the students and judge their mini companies. Finally, thank you to our business and LCVP teachers for their help and guidance throughout.

Student Council Christmas Collection for Arklow Community Action

Arklow CBS student council have extended the deadline for their annual food collection for Arklow Community Action to Wednesday December 14th. This collection is to support people in our community in need at this time of year. Non-perishable foods, toiletries, new toys, sweets and treats would be appreciated. Any donations big or small will be greatly welcomed. Thank you.

Rugby News

On Thursday our senior rugby team played against St. Mary’s Portlaoise in the semi-final of the Anne McInerny Cup. The game finished on the closest of margins with a final score of 25- 24. A bitterly disappointing result but we are extremely proud of how the boys conducted themselves on the field. Every player can be proud of their performance on the day and in the other matches in the competition. No one moment decided the game’s result and we are sure that they will have many more good days ahead of them in their sporting careers. Best of luck to St. Mary’s Portlaoise in the final. Our junior rugby also had their first outing of the year last week as they attended a junior rugby blitz in Tullow Rugby Club.

Soccer News

Hard luck to our u17 football team who drew with Creagh College Gorey on Tuesday last week. Unfortunately, as a result of goal difference they failed to progress to the next round of the league, and this will being to an end this group’s chance of winning silverware this year. Although our first-year soccer team put on a fantastic performance on Tuesday against Enniscorthy CBS, unfortunately we lost 1-0. The lads played a fantastic game, with several score attempts made but none of them were a success. Preparation for our next Wicklow-Wexford league game which will take place in January is underway.
