Match report from Senior rugby match Arklow CBS 15 v East Glendalough 7

Anyone in attendance at the Oval in Arklow on Monday afternoon had the pleasure of witnessing a fantastic Leinster senior school semi final between local rivals CBS and EGS. With players from both teams playing for the opposition clubs this was always going to be a full blooded match with hard hits and marginal calls.

CBS started the game as they meant to go on gathering the ball early and pressuring the Wicklow town side’s defensive line . This pressure finally paid off with there first try of the game after some dynamic ball carrying from the forwards. This resulted in the first 5 pointer. The CBS forwards kept up the pressure in the half. With Conor Healy at 9 at Conn Kinsella at 10’s control and excellent kicking from hand marching the EGS side back at every opportunity. With the game heading to half time CBS managed to notch a second try to give them a 10 point lead at the break.

After the break EGS were like a team transformed using the width of the pitch at the Oval to their advantage as there backline started to exert pressure on what had been a resolute Arklow defensive line with Sean McCarthy and Darragh O'Murchú putting in some monster hits. EGS managed to get over the whitewash midway through the half to narrow the gap to 3 points. With the game then in the melting pot the aforementioned Kinsella who excelled with his boot all day kicked two well executed 50-22s to keep EGS on the back foot. With CBS gaining control again the subs of the bench Oran Kelly and Dean Kelly Farrell in particular brought some much needed energy to keep the pressure on. Seán McCarthy managed to extend the Arklow sides lead breaking through the cover and dotting down to extend his school lead leaving it to a two score game with 8 minutes to go. EGS piled on the pressure but some resolute defending again from the home side gave them the victory in the battle of the neighbours.

Basketball News

It was an extremely couple of busy weeks for our basketball players with matches against Gorey Community School and Creagh College, Gorey.

Our first and second year basketball teams were in action against Gorey Community School.

Our first years came out victorious on a score line of 23 to 14 in Coral Leisure Centre. Arklow came out best in the first quarter outscoring their opponents 6 to 2. In the second quarter the local boys worked hard and produced a great team performance to put in 7 baskets with only 1 from Gorey in reply. In the third and fourth quarters gorey pushed back and but the CBS held firm to get their first win of the competition. It was a great team performance and bodes well for their final game against Creagh College. Scorers on the day were MVPs Kyal Byrne and Darragh Kinch with 6 points each, other scorers on the day were Philip Michta, Dylan Molloy, Kristian Dowling, and Ben Zhou.

Our second years had a much tougher day on the court and unfortunately despite some good periods of play they lost out to a strong Gorey Community School Team. Scorers on the day for the CBS were MVP Ryan Morgan with 7 points, Tom Kavanagh with 4 points and Matthew Byrne with a free throw. They will be looking forward to facing Creagh for a chance to put in the type of performance they are capable of.

Arklow CBS had two good wins later on in the week against Creagh College in the 1st and 2nd Year Basketball league.

1st Years came out with a 28 6 win which should hopefully put them through to the next round of competition. This team as found their rhythm in the last two games and look to be really gelling on the court. The first quarter was the Kyal Byrne show as he found form with his lay ups scoring 6 points while Philip Michta made sure that Creagh only got the one score with a solid defensive performance. The second quarter saw a different 5 players on the court and they worked just as hard with Darragh Kinch taking over main scoring duties with 3 baskets of his own. In the third quarter Creagh upped their defensive performance and kept the CBS scoreless but led from the back by Kristian Dowling the CBS made sure that Creagh were only able to get the one basket in this period. The final quarter saw the CBS ensure they were going to come out with the win outscoring their opponents 4 to 2. Scores on the day were joint MVPs Kyal Byrne and Darragh Kinch with 6 points each followed by Philip Michta and Comghan Powell with 4 points and Cillian McDonald, Riain Dunning, Dylan Molloy and Aaron Kenna with 2 points each.

2nd Years will await to see the final results in the group but a win today will give them a very slim hope of going through to the next round if every other result goes in their favour. It is a very outside chance, so if their season is over it was a great performance to end on. The first quarter was a tight affair with both teams having very good defensive performances but lacking a little in accuracy with Tom Kavanagh getting the only score of the quarter. The CBS took over in the second quarter coming out on top 6 to 3. The third quarter put the result beyond doubt as the CBS started to find their range and they came out 8 2 up and rounded out the game with a solid final quarter putting in two more baskets. Scorers on the day were MVP Sean O’Connor with 6 points, followed by Tom Kavanagh and Adam Lifely with 4 each and rounded out with 2 points from Matthew Byrne, Shane Gregory, and Ciaran Redmond.

Ukraine appeal

We were absolutely blown away with the support we got for our Ukraine appeal. Between the coffee morning and the non-uniform day the school raised an astounding €2000. Our food and essential items appeal surpassed our expectations. The parcels were delivered to O’Connor’s shop and have now made their way to those in dire need of supplies. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support and kindness.
