Fire fighters talk – National Fire Safety week.

This week is National Fire Safety Week and our students were lucky enough to have a visit from two local firefighters, Derek Kavanagh and Adam Neary. The firefighters spoke to the students about the importance of fire safety in the home and of respecting the dangers of fire. Students were shown smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors in action and were also given instruction in how they should be installed in their homes. The talks the students received were very informative and the students learned a lot. We are very grateful to Derek and Adam for giving up their time to talk to the students.

First Year Options

Today sees our first years move over to their final subject taster modules. At Arklow CBS we pride ourselves on allowing our new first years to sample all the available junior cycle subjects. Students can then base their future subject choices on the subjects they enjoyed most and excelled at during the sampling period. Subject sampling in first year has proved to be a very valuable asset to students and allows them to make informed decisions.

TY Work Experience

Next week sees our TY students go out on work placement. This is an exciting time for Transition Year students as they get to experience the world of work. Arklow CBS are very appreciative of all the employers who open their workplaces to the students to give them this valuable insight into the world of work.

Senior Gaelic

The Wicklow Schools Junior Championship started in a rain soaked Ballinakill today. CBS were grouped together with Avondale and Gael Colaste Na Mara in a new look Blitz qualifier system. Our first game out saw us take on Avondale. Avondale raced into a two point lead before Joe McGeary settled our early nerves and kicked a fine point. Avondale maintained that two point lead until Con Kinsella rode two challenges and majestically slotted the ball into the back of the net to put Arklow into the lead just before half time. It was more of the same from our lads in the second half as points from Conn Kinsella and Kealan Delaney kept the CBS ahead. Adam Mulervy marshalled the half back line very well while Darragh O’ Murchu and Jordan O’ Neill proved a constant threat on either side. I would go so far as to say that as an attacking threat O’ Neill is probably on par with Dublin’s Jack McCaffrey. The decisive moment of the second half came when Kealen Delaney plucked a high ball from the air which he followed with a clinical finish to the back of the net. Another point from Con Kinsella ensured Arklow ran out 2-4 to 0-7 winners. Our second encounter saw us take on local rivals Gael Scoil na Mara. The first half was dominated by the CBS lads who raced into a 4 point lead. All four points coming from Joe McGeary who tormented the opposition in the opening half. In the second half Gael Scoil na Mara came out strong and got back to within one point of the CBS. Indeed, the Gael Scoil could have really made Arklow pay for a sluggish second half had it not been for some assured fielding from Sean ‘Murf’ Murphy in the CBS goal. Anto Dornan denied the Gael Scoil a certain goal as he extended every sinew of his bicep to fist block a shot that would have certainly broken any another mere mortal’s arm. This proved to be the injection of life that the CBS lads needed as Darragh O’ Murchu, now switched from half back to corner forward seized on a loose ball and showed his predatory instincts by firing the ball into the right side of the net. It was Patrick O’ Halloran who created most of the play in the final stages and kept the ball moving with a 95% pass accuracy. Today’s victories ensure that the CBS move into the Junior A championship. While most of these lads have had an exceptional season with AGB, it would be hoped we can go on and replicate this when the Junior A schools championship resumes. Many thanks to Mr. Cosgove for his fabulous write up and for all the time he puts into the team!

TY Trip

This week, Arklow CBS Transition Year classes took part in Woodland Orienteering at Castlecomer Discovery Park as part of Maths Week. Students took part in a series of challenges which they had to endeavour to complete in a fixed time period. Activities included ones that drew on a range of skills such as observation, estimation, reasoning, measuring and problem - solving. A big thank you to Castlecomer Discovery Park for a great day. And thanks also to Ms. Domican and Mr. O’ Gorman for accompanying the students.
